Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology at GITAM offers undergraduate degrees at four levels according to NEP 2020, including a BA (Honours) and BA (Honours by Research) in Sociology. Sociology as a discipline explores the evolution of societies, probing into human interaction within and outside groups and social strata. Sociology examines the profound impact of institutions on our daily existence and life chances. With its distinctive and critical lens, Sociology empowers students to locate individuals as embedded constituents in the societal framework, and yet as potent agents of social change.

Career Prospects

Career prospects for sociology graduates are varied, including civil services and state public services. Careers in research in development consultancies, media and publishing houses are also a popular choice, at regional and international levels. Job opportunities in NGOs and organisations engaged in policy and impact analysis are lucrative and satisfying careers for Sociology students. Their skills are invaluable in projects involving surveys, such as elections and market research.

Courses

The courses in these programmes train students on the classical foundations of the discipline, the fundamental categories of sociological thought, and contemporary advances in the discipline to understand problems of the modern world. The department’s focus on research methodology, internships and dissertation writing trains students to construct models to analyse complex social, cultural, and economic phenomena. The department also offers a bouquet of relevant minor courses to students from other schools.
