Welcome to the Mechanical Engineering Department
The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 1981 to cater to the demand of engineers with global knowledge. The department is committed in encouraging entrepreneurship, research and providing superlative engineering education. The undergraduate student intake into the department is 120. Post graduate courses in M.Tech (CAD/CAM), M.Tech(Machine Design ) with an intake of 30 students each & PhD Research programme has started during 2007-2008.
The Department maintains a close liaison with industries and ensures that students are trained as per industry requirements. The under graduate courses in Mechanical Engineering has become Autonomous with effect from 2003-04 batch onwards. After GITAM being conferred the status the Deemed University in the year 2007, the department of Mechanical Engineering has been a part of the GITAM Institute of Technology (GIT), GITAM University (GU). The Department undertakes the tasks of designing & updating the curriculum, implementing the class work and laboratories, conducting the examinations etc. With this flexibility in the curriculum of the programmes, the board of studies intends to incorporate latest development in the fields of Design, Thermal ,Manufacturing, Industrial Engg ,CAD/CAM, Robotics, Condition monitoring ,Vision systems and other allied fields so that the students are exposed to the latest technological advancement in the course of their study.
The department has highly qualified and experienced faculty guided by Dr. M. R.S. Satyanarayana an authority in his own right .The Department has 2 Professors , 8 Associate Professors , 22 Assistant Professors. The department has good infrastructural facilities and is equipped with full-fledged laboratories. There are Six laboratories (M.E-I, M.E-II, HMT, CAD lab, CADD lab& EnggGraphics ) to cater the needs of students but also provide facilities in all areas related to mechanical to those who are interested in pursuing their research work. These labs are supported with adequate technical staff.
The department has well equipped CAD/CAM facilities viz., a CNC lathe, CNC Milling and software’s like AUTOCAD, mechanical desktop, Algor, NASTRAN, Multiphysics, ANSYS, HYPER MESH, CATIA& Edge cam. The department also has audio-visual facilities with Modern tools for effective teaching.
There are good number of doctorates in the department and active research work in the fields of Vibration analysis, Tool wear monitoring, Machinery faults- Diagnostic studies using various optimization techniques like Neural Networks, Fuzzy techniques, Simulated Annealing, Genetic algorithm etc., are in progress. The faculty publishes their research papers in National/International peer reviewed Journals and Conferences very frequently.
Hindustan petroleum corporation, Shipbuilding centre, university grants commission, Naval science & technological laboratory, have been supporting this department through various research projects.
The faculties are well motivated and take personal care of the students by counseling them at regular intervals and also giving feedback to the parents/guardians on regular basis about the progress of their wards regularly.
A congenial atmosphere prevails in the department and in particular between the teacher and Student .Remedial classes are conducted to ensure help to students in specific areas and to take more personal care of the students. This helps the students not only in examinations but also to face competitive exams and interviews confidently. Personality development is special attention and taken care by conducting student seminars, group discussions etc. Conducting seminars, workshops and conferences on the latest developments and arranging industrial visits and expert lectures for the benefit of the students are regular features in the department.
Students of our department actively participate in National-level Student Paper Contests being organized at IIT's, NIT's and various other Engineering Colleges. Some of them have also been awarded in these paper contests.
As a part of the curriculum, Industrial visits have been arranging for students of B.E 2/4 in I Semester. The Institute has an ISTE Student's Chapter and the students of our department who are members of ISTE actively participate in the various activities of ISTE. Many students top scored in GRE,GMAT,CAT,GATE etc.
The quality of education imparted and the resulting professional competence of the graduates enabled the Department to achieve a high record of placement of its graduates in India and abroad.
The extracurricular and co- curricular activities among the students and staff are encouraged and in the annual event like “G.A.M.E” (GITAM association of Mechanical Engineering) the talents are brought out. An annual event “SANGARSH” is conducted every year by the students. The students are also encouraged to attend and publish papers in seminars, conferences and journals.
Important national dailies in India, like “The Hindu” and The Indian Express” ranked GITAM as one of the premier institute in the nation for its overall quality in under graduate and post graduate education.
