The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was started in the year 1981. Since then it has grown several folds and has become the most sought after department in the University. The programme B.E. (ECE) has become autonomous with effect from 2003-04 admitted batch of students. The department maintains a closed liaison with industries and ensures that students are trained as per the current needs of the society. The GIT undertakes the tasks of designing the curriculum, implementing the class work and laboratories, conducting the examinations etc. With this flexibility in the curriculum of the programmes, the board of studies intends to incorporate latest development in the fields of Electronics, Communication, Computers, Signal Processing and other allied fields in a dynamic fashion so that the students are exposed to the latest technological advancement in the course of their study. The department is accredited by NBA in 2006 for a period of three years. A PG course, M.Tech in Radar & Microwave Engineering was started in department with effect from 2006-07 batch. Three more PG courses are introduced in the department with effect from the academic year 2008-2009. M.Tech in VLSI Design, M.Tech in Digital Systems and Signal processing and M.Tech in VLSI Design (Evening course) are designed keeping in view the current trends in the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering. The specialization of Radar & Microwave Engineering in P G Program is modified as RF & Microwave Engineering to cater to a broader spectrum of Communication Technologies.
Faculty & Research:
The department is full fledged with adequate and eminent faculty Headed by Prof. V.Malleswara Rao, Ph.D. Active research work in the fields of Antennas, Microwave Engineering, Signal Processing, EMI/EMC, VLSI Design, Biomedical Engineering, GPS etc is in progress. The faculty publishes their research papers in national / International Conferences / Seminars very frequently. Two Associate Professors submitted their thesis work leading to Ph.D at their respective universities. All eligible faculty members have registered for their Ph.D(part time) with various Universities in India and are actively pursuing their research work. Four research scholars have registered with the department under GITAM University. The department is active in organizing National Conferences and Workshops. It has conducted one National Conference and Two National Workshops in the latest topics of related fields in the last three years. Prof Dharma Raj and Mr. B T Krishna authored a textbook ’Electronic Devices and Circuits’ published by Pearson Education (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. Two more textbooks entitled ‘Satellite Communication’ and ‘Microwave Engineering’ by Prof. Dharma Raj were published by IK International Publishing House, Delhi and Scitech Publishers, Chennai respectively ‘Electronic Circuit Design’ an International textbook published by M/s Pearson Education was adapted by Prof. Dharma Raj to suit the needs of Indian Student curriculum.
Two major research projects funded by UGC were successfully completed in the department worth Rs. 8.5 Lakhs. One UGC major research project is ongoing with a fund of Rs. 4.3 lakhs. UGC Project ‘Instrumentation Maintenance Facility’ takes care of all the equipment of various continuant colleges and departments of GITAM. The Project has a sanction of Rs. 13.61 Lakhs.
Infrastructure:
There are 7 laboratories (Basic Electronics, Analog Electronics, Digital Systems, Communication Systems, Microwave Engineering, Computing Systems and Advanced Computing Systems laboratories) which are fully equipped not only to cater the needs of under graduate and post graduate students but also to facilitate those who are interested in pursuing their research work. Adequate numbers of computing systems are available in the department and it possesses all the required licensed softwares like Mathab, Xilinx, Protes VSM Electronic Circuit Simulation, Altera, Tanner Tools, Code Compser Studio, Signal Processing etc. The Communication Systems laboratory of the department is fully equipped with latest modules of Analog and Digital Communication Systems. A 3 GHz Spectrum analyzer is the latest addition in the state of art Microwave Engineering laboratory. The department library houses around 500 volumes of reference books to cater the needs of research and development work. These books are also referred by students to get an insight in the latest technologies.
Students:
The faculty is well motivated and takes personal care of the students and council them at regular intervals and informs the parents / guardians about the progress of their ward regularly. Every 20 students are mentored by an experienced faulty member. Academic monitoring committee chaired by one of the senior faculty member meets once in a fortnight to review the academic progress of each section and see to that the class work progresses smoothly as per the academic calendar of the GIT. Extra tutorial classes are conducted to take more personal care of the students. This helps the student in preparing for the semester end examinations and also aids in facing the competitive exams and interviews confidently. Personality development of students is taken care by conducting special classes in the third year of their study. Also, English Communication Skills Lab is conducted in the second year of study as a part of their academic curriculum. An Industrial tour is being arranged in the break between the two semesters of second year of study for ten days. Industrial training is imparted for duration of six weeks after the second semester of the third year of study. Industrial training course carry credits. The industrial tours and training imparted to the students in their curriculum makes them ready to take up any type of assignment when they start their professional career after completing the degree. Not only industrial training is imparted, but also entrepreneurship training is offered to the students to encourage them to start their own industries/firms.
Of the 24 batches of the students graduated from this department till date, around 1000 alumni are in USA either pursuing higher studies or working as professionals. Around 100 are entrepreneurs running their own industries/firms offering jobs to many people in the related fields. The department has a near 100% campus recruitment record. Majority of the students of final year are absorbed into various well-reputed firms. The department has a continuous rapport with its alumni and arranges guest lectures whenever possible so that the present students are motivated by their seniors’ experiences and well guided to choose their profession. ‘Sudhir Memorial Award’ is constituted by the 1995 – 99 batch of students in memory of their class mate Mr. Sudhir. Rs. 5000/- is given to class topper as FIRST prize and Rs.3000/- to the SECOND ranker of Final year students every year on 5th September, the Death Anniversary of Mr. Sudhir.
The co-curricular activities among the students are encouraged. Students submit papers at various student paper contests conducted by various institutions throughout the country and acquire good ranks. Also the students are encouraged in extra curricular activities like sports, games and other cultural activities. An annual event INTERFACE is conducted every year. The students of the department organized a hardware exhibition ‘SCULPT’ in February 2007 exhibiting around 50 working models of electronics and allied field modules purely designed, fabricated and tested by the students of the department. The students are also encouraged to attend and publish papers in seminars, conferences and journals.
In continuation to the best traditions set up by the department, the students of Electronics and Communication Engineering organize a National Technical Symposium CENACLE every year during the month of February. This event gazes the participation of students from various universities of India actively taking part in technical paper presentations, hardware modeling and poster presentations along with co-curricular activities like Robot racing, technical quiz, circuit debugging, Robot work shop etc. The festival arena that binds everyone for these two days is, needless to say, a patent of ECE department of GITAM University. |
