One of the premier Engineering Departments of the GITAM Institute of Technology, the Department of Civil Engineering established in the year 1980, offers B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D, degree programs.
Out of Eighteen faculty members, eight faculty members are having Ph.D Degree. Others are pursuing doctoral degree. Department has 12 qualified supporting staff. The Civil Engineering Department, at GITAM, right from its inception has produced around 2000 Civil Engineering graduates of exceptional quality and caliber with 100% placement in reputed organizations in core and IT sectors. Some of the former students are in coveted positions serving the nation as IAS, IPS, IES officers, some as CEO’s in abroad, after completion of PG-Programs, M.Tech in IIT’s, NIT’s and MS.
The booming Indian economy facilitates hectic activity in the development of infrastructure, created an enormous demand for civil engineers, which is expected to rise in future. The department aims to provide, international Training & Placement, apart from a Scintillating Engineering career–in Civil Engineering.
In order to produce Civil Engineers of global repute by imparting training and insight into vital areas of civil engineering at under graduate & Post Graduate level covered as per the curriculum includes all core specializations of Structural Engineering, Hydraulics & Water Resources Engg, Geotechnical Engg, Transportation Engg, Environmental Engineering, Surveying & Engineering Geology. Special emphasis is given on advanced Non-destructive methods of testing for quality assessment, health monitoring, of structures. Advanced surveying methods, GIS, to all civil engg students. Curriculum is updated frequently to suit the industry requirements which includes subjects like Disaster Management is a thrust topic in today’s global natural calamities increased to a high intensity in the last few years.
NDT, CACE and IT subjects also as free electives if student desires to choose, is a special feature in GITAM University. Some of the senior faculty is guiding Ph.D, research scholars.
Our Faculty members published 20 technical papers in international journals, 40 in national journals and 250, in National & International Conferences. Nearly 60 technical papers were presented by students for the last five years in various student seminars at IIT’s and at other reputed institutions in and around the state. Some Students secured prizes in IEI model making competitions, For Industrial Training period of 30 to 45 days students were sent to industries, some secured INAE-fellowships for their internship summer training.
Department offers a two year full-time Masters programme in SE&NDM. Which is a rare Course, NDM course exists at very few places in the country, considering its appropriateness in the past scenario.
This program is designed to provide instruction in the international dimension of every structural engineer. It aims at equipping aspiring students to become successful structural engineering professionals in the globally competitive environment. The program provides for specific needs in Structural Engineering, Training in Natural Disaster Management, Rehabilitation and NDT Testing.
Major Highlights of the Department:
- Committed Faculty is a life-line of the institution.
- Good Laboratory & Infrastructural facilities. Preparing resource, self learning material for the proposed Distance Learning Programs.
- The Dept has ongoing sponsored major research projects from UGC, DST etc. Faculty Completed nearly 2-crores worth research projects.
- Some of the important NDT, SE-labs were established from research grants from FIST, MODROBS Schemes etc.
- Department undertakes industrial consultancy work as a part of its interaction with industry. Nearly 90% of consultancy funds of GIT are being generated by faculty members of Civil Engg.
- Faculty extends technical/consultancy services to various Government / Private organizations.
- Faculty played a vital role in the slum removal programs of A.P. State Housing Corporation Ltd in and around the city and replacement with Pucca Houses, carried out works related to “Detailed Project Reports” to GVMC for accessing JNNURM funds.
- The Department organizes STTP, Seminars for professional interaction. And also contributes to the inter-disciplinary academic and research activity.
- The Dept. pays a special attention to student counseling, various student centric activities for the growth and overall personality development of the Students including GOAL Setting Workshops.
- The Department arranges lectures on Stress Management, Psychological Problems, Technical, thrust areas in Civil Engg. Survey Camp, Industrial Training, PD Classes are made as part of curriculum.
- Most of the student project works are related to (Industry-Institute Interaction). industrial problems and with a special emphasis to social relevance.
- Another important strength of the department is the technical support & career guidance by former students, well placed in coveted positions in the country & abroad.
